Painting on the iPad

September 30, 2020

I have many updates I should be writing, but I got distracted. Creative market is way too addicting, and the amazing creators of brushes there are mind blowing.

The other day, I was thinking “man, I’d love to try oil painting irl” but, alas, that definitely isn’t happening. So I stared experimenting with painting brushes on the iPad, and I just couldn’t get the effects I wanted or understand how they work.

I did what I do whenever I’m in a rut, and look at stuff to buy (lol) and that put me to creative market. I started just flipping through painter style brushes, and wound up here.

The textures are amazing, and it’s fun to try something completely new. I know how to paint with watercolors, so I know what I want from brushes (I should review all of those brushes I’ve bought!) and how I want them to look and act. Since I have minimal experience with oils, I didn’t know what to expect, so it’s more just playing.

I did a few other pieces with these to just see how they go. But here is the first one that I’m actually spending time working on.

Sketch for reference

In these, you can see the textures that these brushes give. The red coloring in the eyeshadow and markings are on different layers blending differently to apply the color. It’s so awesome to be able to mimic traditional media it’s digital filtering and blending!

I can’t wait to see what comes next with these.

What do you think? And can you guess the character?
